The Minnesota Wild reached the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 5-2 home win over the Dallas Stars, while the Anaheim Ducks advanced after beating the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 in the series.

The Wild entered the potential series-clinching game on a two-game win streak, aiming for their first second-round appearance in 11 years.

Minnesota opened the scoring just past six minutes in. Quinn Hughes netted the first goal after being set up by Marcus Foligno and finishing clinically.

That was the only goal of the first period, with Minnesota outshooting Dallas 7-4. Neither side earned a power play in the opening 20 minutes as the intensity built at Grand Casino Arena.

Dallas hit back in the second with two goals to claim the only lead they’d hold all night. Wyatt Johnston capitalized on a power play after Yakov Trenin went to the box for interference, finding space near the net to convert Mikko Rantanen’s pass from the boards.

Later in the period, the Stars went ahead. After killing another penalty, Mavrik Bourque pounced on a loose puck in the crease to put Dallas up.

Trailing for the first time, Minnesota answered quickly. A failed clearance by Dallas saw the puck fall to Hughes, whose shot was redirected to Vladimir Tarasenko. Tarasenko buried it while falling, scoring his 50th career NHL playoff goal.

Tied 2-2 going into the third, the game was set for a tense finish as Dallas fought to extend its season.

Each team killed a 40-second power play and played 80 seconds of four-on-four. Just past the halfway point of the period, Hughes struck again. The defenseman drove down the left wing and beat Jake Oettinger to put Minnesota back in front.

Dallas spent the last 9:30 chasing an equalizer to force overtime, but none of their 10 shots in the period got past Jesper Wallstedt.

The Stars pulled their goalie late for an extra attacker, but couldn’t convert. Matthew Boldy sealed it with two empty-net goals.

Minnesota advances 4-2 in the series and will meet President’s Trophy winners Colorado Avalanche in round two.
