Tielemans Reveals Training Routine Behind Europa League Final Volley
Villa’s midfielder breaks down the short corner routine behind his goal that helped seal Villa’s first European trophy since 1982.
One day’s practice, one perfect volley. Tielemans reveals how Villa’s Europa League opener came together...
Youri Tielemans said the stunning volley he scored in Aston Villa’s 3-0 Europa League final win over Freiburg came after just one session working on it in training.
The midfielder put Villa ahead late in the first half at the Besiktas Stadium on Wednesday with a strike that looked straight out of a drill the team had practiced the day before.
The Belgian midfielder timed his run perfectly to connect with Morgan Rogers’ cross from a short corner routine, then struck a powerful volley from just inside the box to beat Freiburg’s keeper.
Unai Emery’s team doubled their lead right before half-time with another impressive finish, as Emiliano Buendia curled a shot from 18 yards into the far corner.
Rogers added a third in the second half to seal Villa’s first trophy in 30 years and their first European success since 1982.
“I feel amazing. My voice is a bit gone but it's all good. We put in a shift, top performance, we had a great season. To top it off with this, it's amazing,” Tielemans said.
“We only had one day to practise, we did it on Monday and it went brilliantly tonight. So happy.”
Villa’s strong end to the season was capped off by securing Champions League qualification last week.

Tielemans said the turnaround felt a long way from the start of the campaign, when Villa went six games without a win and managed just two goals.
“It's amazing. It's been a season with a lot of ups and downs. We started so so bad. Our standards were very poor," he said.
“The way we turned things around was a credit to the players and staff.
“We kept working, believing. We got the win in the end, Champions League next season and a trophy.”
England midfielder Rogers added: “It's hard to put into words, we've worked so hard for this. We've delivered and come through.
“It's a great moment for the fans, great for the club. We'll go down in history.
“The manager has been banging on at me to get easier goals and get into the box. I'm happy I could get a toe onto it and score.”
