Struggling FC Copenhagen salvaged their season by beating Brondby 3-1 after extra time to secure a spot in Conference League qualifying. Despite a poor domestic campaign that left the former Danish champions in the relegation play-offs, Bo Svensson’s side finished on a high note.


Copenhagen had the final say in a tense derby at Brondby Stadium, earning a place in European competition for next season.


After a dramatic extra-time playoff for a Conference League spot, FC Copenhagen beat Brondby 3-1. Brondby looked beaten when Mayckel Lahdo was sent off, but they managed to force extra time with a late equalizer.


It was much-maligned striker Youssoufa Moukoko who stepped up with the decisive goals, giving FCK something to celebrate after a disappointing season that saw them drop into the Superliga relegation play-offs for the first time.


With the derby win, FC Copenhagen secure a place in Conference League qualifying when the new season starts.


Brondby ended the season with nothing to show for it. They only just climbed to fourth in the Superliga to keep their European hopes alive, but Copenhagen snuffed those out in the sunshine at Brondby Stadium.


Copenhagen derbies are rarely pretty, and this one was no different. It was entertaining, nervy, and tense throughout, even though neither side scored in the first half.




The game swung Copenhagen’s way in the 67th minute when Mayckel Lahdo was sent off for stamping on Thomas Delaney. Ten minutes later, Copenhagen made the extra man count as Aurelio Buta drove into the box and fired past Brondby keeper Pastrick Pentz from a tight angle.


Brondby hit back almost immediately. Three minutes later, Mads Froekjaer nicked the ball off Junnosuke Suzuki and slotted it past Dominik Kotarski to level the score.


The red card eventually proved costly for Brondby. They faded in extra time, and Youssoufa Moukoko took advantage with a clever backheel to put Copenhagen back in front.


Brondby fans thought they had a late equalizer when Jordi Vanlerberghe smashed the ball into the top corner, but VAR ruled it out for offside after a long check. Moukoko then sealed the win with a late goal to end Brondby’s hopes.
