Victor Wembanyama will travel with the San Antonio Spurs to Portland for Friday’s NBA playoff game, coach Mitch Johnson said, but he remains in concussion protocol and his playing status is uncertain.
The 22-year-old French star was diagnosed with a concussion after a hard fall to the court in Portland’s 106-103 win at San Antonio on Tuesday, which tied the best-of-seven first-round series at 1-1.
Wembanyama, this season’s NBA Defensive Player of the Year, was present at team workouts Wednesday and Thursday but was not cleared to participate under league concussion protocols.
“Wemby” can gradually increase his activity, but he’s evaluated medically after each step and must be cleared by doctors before he can play again.
“He's looking good,” Johnson said Thursday. “The update is that he's following each protocol and he's progressing and will travel with the team.”
