Spurs vs Everton: Can Tottenham Break Home Win Drought on Final Day?

Tottenham vs Everton preview

From Richarlison facing his former club to Romero’s Argentina trip, all the storylines ahead of Tottenham’s last game of the season against Everton.

Tottenham have home advantage as they face Everton in a relegation decider...

It’s difficult to believe, but heading into the final match of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur could still be relegated to the Championship for the first time in 49 years.

The season has been miserable for the Lilywhites. A lengthy injury list didn’t help, and it also contributed to Ange Postecoglou’s failure to deliver domestic success during his time at the club.

Tottenham Need One More Point to Secure Safety.

Winning the Europa League last season gave Spurs fans some optimism. Even though Tottenham only avoided relegation by one place, they finished 13 points clear of 18th-placed Leicester City.

That European success didn’t translate into progress at home. The club failed to build on it, and results gradually fell apart under Thomas Frank. Frank is respected for his tactical knowledge, but he had never managed a club of Tottenham’s size before, having spent his career at Brentford and other smaller teams.

Fast forward to the last game of the 2025/26 season, and Tottenham still need at least a point against Everton to make sure they stay in the Premier League for 2026/27.

The club got a boost when Roberto De Zerbi took over as manager. After Igor Tudor’s short and unsuccessful spell in charge, De Zerbi was brought in with one clear job: keep Tottenham up.

De Zerbi Has Stabilised Tottenham at the Right Time

De Zerbi’s start was mixed. He lost his first game in charge against Sunderland and also fell to Chelsea in the most recent match. Between those results, Tottenham beat Aston Villa and Wolves, and picked up draws against Leeds United and Brighton.

West Ham are the only team who can still overtake Spurs, but they need to beat Leeds and hope Tottenham lose. With West Ham losing their last three games, the advantage sits firmly with the North Londoners.

Spurs fans have reason to feel confident. Everton have won just one of their last 16 Premier League away games at Tottenham’s stadium, with 4 draws and 11 losses. They’ve also lost their last four visits to N17, conceding 13 goals and scoring only one.

The record gets worse for Everton on final days in London. This will be the 10th time they face a London side in the capital on the last day of the season. In the previous nine matches, they’ve won only once, drawn twice, and lost six times. That single win came against Fulham in the 2008/09 season.

Everton are winless in six matches across all competitions, with 3 draws and 3 losses. David Moyes hasn’t gone seven Premier League games without a win since 2023, when he was at West Ham. For Everton, you have to go back to 2010 to find the last time he failed to win in seven straight league games.

The Toffees have also made a habit of throwing away leads. They led in each of their last three Premier League matches but didn’t win any of them, drawing 3-3 with Manchester City and 2-2 with Crystal Palace before losing 3-1 to Sunderland. You have to go back to October 1999 to find the last time Everton led but failed to win in four consecutive Premier League games.

Spurs lost 4-1 to Brighton on the final day last season, but they haven’t lost on two consecutive final days since the run between 2007/08 and 2009/10. If they beat Everton on Sunday, it will also be the first time since 2017/18 that Tottenham complete a league double over the Toffees.

There is still a warning sign for the Lilywhites. They haven’t won a home Premier League game in 10 matches, with 4 draws and 6 losses. That’s their longest winless run at home since going 14 matches without a win at N17 between October 1993 and April 1994.

History and Richarlison Add Extra Edge to the Finale

If Tottenham survive and finish 17th again, it will mark the first time they’ve ended two straight top-flight seasons that low since 1912/13 to 1914/15. Back then, they finished 17th, 17th, and then 20th over three campaigns.

Tottenham will be counting on top scorer Richarlison to deliver against his former club when it matters most.

Richarlison has 15 goal contributions in the Premier League this season, with 11 goals and 4 assists. He’s also been effective against Everton, scoring four times and adding one assist in his last five meetings with them.

James Maddison’s return comes at a good time for De Zerbi, who will rely on his creativity to break Everton down. Tottenham will be without Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mo Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Ben Davies, and Cristian Romero for the game.

Cristian Romero won’t be at the stadium. He’s chosen to travel to Argentina to watch his former club Belgrano face River Plate in a title decider.

Dominic Solanke is facing a late fitness test, but it looks unlikely he’ll feature. For Everton, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jack Grealish are out, while Idrissa Gueye will have a late check to see if he’s fit.

Goals haven’t been in short supply when these sides meet. Each of the last three games between Tottenham and Everton has had at least three goals, so this one could stay open right up to the final whistle.
