Tottenham are among the clubs considering a summer move for midfielder Hayden Hackney. They are looking to take advantage of Middlesbrough’s failure to reach the Premier League.

Spurs will stay in the top flight next season after a 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday. Middlesbrough will not join them, having lost a late heartbreaker to Hull City at Wembley Stadium.

Now 23, Hackney is expected to be one of Middlesbrough’s most in-demand players this summer. Offers are likely to start at around £20 million.

He has one year left on his current deal and is believed to be keen to test himself in the Premier League.

Spurs see Hackney as a strong fit for the recruitment model they are building under their long-term plan.

The recruitment drive aims to move past this season’s frustrations and build a squad capable of challenging for European places again as early as next year.

Spurs are also looking at other targets in the market. We reported on Saturday that West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen could become a target if the Hammers were relegated, and that has now happened.

Tottenham also face decisions over player departures, with Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario among the higher-profile names expected to leave.
