Southampton have asked for additional time to complete an internal review following accusations of spying made by Middlesbrough. Both clubs are competing for a return to the Premier League next season.

The Saints host their promotion rivals at St Mary’s on Tuesday for the second leg of the Championship playoff semi-final, after the first leg finished 0-0 on Saturday.

The winner of the tie will meet Hull City at Wembley, with a Premier League spot on the line.

Southampton were charged by the English Football League on Friday after Middlesbrough alleged unauthorized filming at their training ground before Saturday’s first leg at the Riverside.

Although clubs usually get 14 days to reply, the EFL said it wants an independent disciplinary commission hearing convened quickly.

CEO Phil Parsons said Southampton are fully cooperating and conducting their own internal review to make sure all the facts and context are clear.

“Given the intensity of the fixture schedule and the short turnaround between matches, we have requested time to complete that process thoroughly and responsibly,” he said.

“We understand the discussion and speculation ‌that has followed over recent days, but we also believe it is important ‌that the full context is established before conclusions are drawn.”

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert refused to address the controversy, ending his post-match press conference on Saturday and leaving after reporters kept pressing him on the issue.
