Chelsea’s Sam Kerr surpasses Fran Kirby with 64th WSL goal

Sam Kerr scored her 64th WSL goal for Chelsea on Sunday, overtaking Fran Kirby to become the club’s leading scorer in the league.

Sam Kerr said she was “stoked” after netting her 64th Chelsea goal on Sunday, passing Fran Kirby to become the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Women’s Super League.

The 32-year-old Australia striker headed in a Niamh Charles cross in the 13th minute of Chelsea’s 3-1 win at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, breaking the record for the eight-time WSL champions.

“I'm absolutely stoked to break ... the record, ⁠it feels amazing to be in the same category as some of those players,” Kerr said ‌in a message to fans on the club's social media.

“But I'm absolutely honoured and it's been amazing to score 64 goals in front of all of you - let's finish off the season strong.”

Kerr is Australia’s all-time top scorer with 75 goals in 139 appearances, and she claimed the WSL Golden Boot in both 2020-21 and 2021-22 after netting 21 and 20 goals respectively.
