Naomi Osaka made another eye-catching fashion statement at a Grand Slam on Tuesday, and backed it up with strong tennis to defeat unseeded German Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-6(3) in the French Open first round.

After wearing a jellyfish-inspired outfit at the Australian Open earlier this year, Osaka took the court on Suzanne Lenglen in a sequined waistcoat blouse with a black mesh floor-length train. She then changed into a layered yellow-brown and gold match dress to play.

Honestly, it's very couture,” Osaka said in her on-court interview about her kit.

“Funnily enough, I feel like... You know the Eiffel Tower at night when it's sparkly? I think I look like that a bit.”

“I felt really nervous, but for me, I haven't played on this ‌court in a little while, so it's nice to get out here and play ‌in front of everyone,” Osaka added.

“It's really hot, so I hope everyone is drinking water.”

Siegemund wore a much simpler outfit and competed well once the match started, but four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka quickly took charge of the first set and closed it out with little trouble.

The blazing afternoon sun made conditions tougher for both players. Osaka let the momentum slip in the second set, but the 16th seed saved a set point, came back from 5-3 down, forced a tiebreak, and won it.

Osaka will face 2024 Paris Olympics silver medallist Donna Vekic in the next round after the Croatian player defeated home favorite Alice Tubello with ease.
