NHL Recap: Flyers on the Brink After Hurricanes Make It 3-0 in East Semi-Final

Flyers Vs Hurricanes
Hurricanes rout Flyers 4-1 to take 3-0 series lead

Frederik Andersen joins elite company with a 7-game playoff win streak as Carolina pushes Philadelphia to the brink in the East semi-final.

Carolina’s depth and special teams proved too much as Philadelphia drops a third straight game and faces elimination on Saturday...

The Hurricanes beat the Flyers 4-1 on the road in a penalty-filled contest to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semi-final.

These two have played tight games all season, with five of their last six matchups going to overtime. This time it was different, with Carolina finishing their chances more efficiently.

The first period belonged to the visitors in terms of chances, and it looked like it might stay scoreless at the break. That changed with 2:33 left when Andrei Svechnikov’s shot missed the net but fell right to Jordan Staal in front of goal. The center reacted quickest and tapped it in from close range.

Game Recap Focus

Philadelphia hit back quickly, finding the equalizer just 2:30 into the second period. Emil Andrae sent the puck toward the net and it deflected through traffic before landing with Trevor Zegras, who buried it from a tight angle to tie things up.

Penalties were a major theme, with both sides racking up double-digit infractions. Late in the middle frame Taylor Hall was sent off for boarding, putting Carolina down a man. It didn’t slow them down - they won the faceoff, broke out, and Jalen Chatfield finished Staal’s pass to put the Hurricanes back in front.

That 2-1 score held through the second intermission, leaving the Flyers chasing the game again.

Things unraveled further for Philadelphia early in the third when they had to kill a 4v3. Carolina made them pay, with Svechnikov one-timing a shot past Daniel Vladar to stretch the lead to two goals for the first time all night.

Minutes later Carolina made it 4-1. Nikolaj Ehlers broke in alone on Vladar and lifted a shot into the top corner to cap off the breakaway.

From there the Hurricanes saw it out, extending their perfect run to seven straight wins to start this postseason. Goalie Frederik Andersen joined elite company too, becoming just the 12th netminder to open the playoffs with seven consecutive wins - matching Igor Shesterkin’s feat from two years ago.

Carolina now has a chance to close out the series on Saturday when the teams meet for Game 4.
