Marner’s hat trick powers Golden knights to 6-2 win

Mitch Marner’s natural hat trick led Vegas past Anaheim in Game 3. The teams meet again in Anaheim for Game 4 with the Ducks facing elimination pressure.

Vegas struck early and never looked back, with goals from Marner, Theodore, McNabb, and Howden sealing Game 3 in Anaheim...

The Vegas Golden Knights reclaimed control of their series on Friday, beating the Anaheim Ducks 6-2 away from home to move 2-1 ahead.

After dropping Game 2 earlier in the week, Vegas struck fast, going in front just 66 seconds in. Jack Eichel slid a cross-ice pass to a wide-open Shea Theodore, and Theodore’s shot beat the goalie to give the visitors an early advantage.

Special teams were a factor in the opening period, with Vegas awarded two power plays and Anaheim one. The Golden Knights successfully killed off their first penalty, but capitalized on the second.

Mitch Marner forced a turnover and broke the other way, holding the puck before feeding Brayden McNabb. McNabb finished past Lukas Dostal to extend Vegas’ lead to 2-0.

Anaheim generated more scoring opportunities in the first period but couldn’t convert any of them.

The home crowd’s night went from bad to worse when Jackson LaCombe was called for elbowing. With time nearly up in the period, Vegas capitalized on the power play as Marner tipped the puck home from close range.

After the first period the Ducks pulled Dostal, who had allowed three goals on eight shots, and sent out Ville Husso to try and slow Vegas down.

Vegas made it 4-0 at 9:19 of the second with crisp passing. Brett Howden found Theodore, who slid it to Marner alone in front, and the former Maple Leaf tapped it in from a few feet out.

Marner kept going and capped his night late in the second, beating Husso at the near post to complete a natural hat trick. The 29-year-old celebrated his first three-goal game of the postseason.

The third period was mostly a formality. Beckett Sennecke got Anaheim on the board, and Chris Kreider added another with under five minutes left to give the home crowd something to cheer.

It wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Howden iced it with an empty-netter in the final minutes to finish the scoring.

Game 4 stays in Anaheim, and the pressure is on the Ducks as they trail 2-1 in the series.
