Hearts fall short in title race but McInnes sees bright future

Hearts led most of the season before losing 3-1 to Celtic in the decider. Manager Derek McInnes says the club will use the heartbreak as motivation.

Hearts boss McInnes confident club can bounce back and challenge for title again...

Hearts manager Derek McInnes said there was still “so much positivity” around the club that would motivate his players, even after they narrowly missed out on a first Scottish Premiership title since 1960.

Hearts had led the table for most of the season but lost out after Celtic scored two late goals to win 3-1 in Saturday’s title decider.

The Edinburgh side did not carry out their post-match media duties. They were quickly taken out of Celtic Park after fans invaded the pitch.

Because of that, McInnes could not speak publicly about the campaign until late Sunday evening. He had been minutes away from ending the decades-long dominance of Celtic and Rangers.

"In the cold light of day, when we look back, there's been so much positivity from where we were at the beginning of the season,” he said after collecting the Scottish Football Writers' Association Manager of the Year award.

“The intention now is to dust ourselves down and try and enjoy our break, but be ready for the challenges ahead.

“I fully believe that those challenges are going to be met, with the enthusiasm from everybody at the club and the desire to improve and make it the norm for us to be challenging for trophies on a more regular basis.”

Hearts finished on a club-record 80 points. Securing a top-two finish for the first time in 20 years also earned them a place in the Champions League qualifiers in July.

“We'll look back and enjoy it but we'll also have that kind of grievance at times and that disappointment to try and spur us on to something greater,” said McInnes.
