McFarlane: Chelsea’s UCL Goal Unlikely, But Morale Is Up at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea’s interim coach urged positivity and focus on the FA Cup and league finish after a five-match losing run led to Liam Rosenior’s sacking last month.
After a 1-0 win over Leeds secured the FA Cup final, McFarlane said spirits are higher at Stamford Bridge despite the gap to the top five...
Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane said qualifying for next season’s Champions League looks increasingly unlikely, with the Blues sitting 10 points off the top five.
McFarlane came back for a second stint as interim boss last month after Liam Rosenior was sacked following five straight defeats. His return started with a 1-0 win over Leeds United that put Chelsea into the FA Cup final.
Eighth-placed Chelsea have 48 points and face Nottingham Forest at home on Monday. When asked if a top-five finish was now out of reach, McFarlane gave a realistic assessment.
“I think you're right when you say that. We have to win our games and not think about anything else,” he told reporters on Friday.
“We need the fans to bring a positive energy and get behind the team. There's a lot to play for.”
McFarlane said the 1-0 win over Leeds had lifted spirits at Stamford Bridge ahead of the May 16 FA Cup final vs Manchester City.
“It's always difficult when you're not performing and not getting the results,” he said.
“It's amazing how a win can change the feel and atmosphere of the group.”

Captain Reece James, working his way back from a hamstring strain, and Levi Colwill have both rejoined training, McFarlane said.
“A little way to the game, so we'll see how they do, but both are looking promising,” he said.
“Levi has had a long injury, Reece had a really good run and was then injured again, so we don't want to push too much.”
