Bellingham on target as Real Madrid Beat Athletic Club

Athletic Club fought back through Guruzeta and Izeta but fell short, ending the season outside the top half after a poor run.

Kylian Mbappe scored his 25th LaLiga goal of the season as Real Madrid finished with a third straight league win...

Dani Carvajal played his last game for Real Madrid and marked it with a brilliant assist, helping Los Blancos close out a disappointing season with a 4-2 win over Athletic Club.

After a turbulent end to the campaign, Real came out determined to finish on a high at the Bernabeu. It was also the club’s chance to say goodbye to club legend Dani Carvajal.

The Spaniard made his 451st and final appearance for Los Blancos and looked sharp from the start. In the opening 15 minutes, he curled a perfect pass into Gonzalo García’s path. García took one touch to steady himself before finishing calmly past Alex Padilla.

That early goal set the tone for Real Madrid. Thiago Pitarch came close to making it two, but Álex Padilla was equal to his effort.

Athletic struggled to create anything in the final third. Gorka Guruzeta had a header but sent it wide.

Real Madrid had lost only once in the last seven meetings against Athletic. They made it 2-0 before half-time when Jude Bellingham finished emphatically from Pitarch’s looped pass. It was his second goal in three games.

The visitors hit back immediately in first-half stoppage time. Guruzeta volleyed home from Iñaki Williams’ cross to give Athletic a lifeline.

Any hopes of a comeback ended early in the second half. Kylian Mbappé scored his 25th LaLiga goal of the season with a clinical low finish from the edge of the box.

Athletic didn’t go quietly. Ernesto Valverde’s side kept pushing and came close through Gorka Guruzeta and Adama Boiro.

Those were the visitors’ best chances of getting back into the game. Real stayed in control late on and made it 4-1 when substitute Brahim Díaz finished from close range.

Los Leones grabbed a late consolation through Urko Izeta’s towering header. Real still ended the season with a third straight league win, finishing eight points behind champions Barcelona.

For Athletic Club, it was a disappointing end. They missed out on a sixth straight top-half finish after losing eight of their last 12 LaLiga matches.
