LaLiga Farewell: Mallorca Relegated Despite Final Day Victory

Mallorca Vs Real Oviedo
Mallorca go down despite 3-0 win over Real Oviedo

Real Oviedo also went down after a seven-game winless run, finishing bottom of LaLiga following their defeat on the final day.

Vedat Muriqi scored his 23rd goal of the campaign, yet Mallorca missed out on safety due to a tiebreaker with Osasuna and Levante...

RCD Mallorca ended a three-game winless run with a 3-0 victory against Real Oviedo, but it wasn’t enough to avoid relegation. They finished on 42 points, the highest total for a relegated team since Deportivo de La Coruña in 2010/11.

The home crowd at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix knew only a win would keep them up. Nerves grew early after a sluggish start from the hosts.

Mallorca nearly suffered the worst possible start when David Carmo found space in the six-yard box, but he failed to connect cleanly with his header.

If anything, that close call woke the hosts up. They pushed forward and put the visitors under pressure, with Takuma Asano and Vedat Muriqi leading the attack.

Asano created the first real chance for Mallorca after breaking clear down the right. He drove a shot across goal, but it just missed the far post.

Muriqi was next to go close and should have scored with a free header. He directed it straight at Horatiu Moldovan, who made a comfortable save.

News from other games wasn’t going Mallorca’s way, but the home crowd got something to cheer when the opener arrived just before half-time.

Pablo Maffeo’s cross looked overhit, but Pablo Torre kept the move alive with a perfectly timed run. He met it with a cushioned first-time volley to put Los Piratas ahead.

With their fate out of their hands, fans turned to their phones to follow the other results.

Mallorca nearly made it 2-0 on 55 minutes when Sergi Darder’s deflected shot hit the post and bounced into Moldovan’s arms.

Real Oviedo offered little threat to Leo Roman. Mallorca sealed the three points in the 83rd minute when Manu Morlanes struck a volley into the ground that looped into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Mallorca added gloss to the scoreline in the 88th minute when Muriqi smashed the ball in from close range. The goal capped an impressive personal season with 23 La Liga goals.

Despite the win, Mallorca were relegated in 18th place after losing out on the tiebreaker to Osasuna and Levante, who also finished on 42 points. Real Oviedo had already been relegated on gameweek 35 and ended the season bottom after a seven-game winless run.
