LaLiga: Levante Beat Mallorca to Move Clear of Relegation Zone
| Levante take control of survival race with win over Mallorca |
Mallorca’s away struggles continued as they fell 2-0 at Levante and now face a must-win clash with Oviedo to stay up.
Goals from Carlos Espi and Kervin Arriaga secured a crucial three points for Levante in a tense relegation six-pointer...
Levante secured a crucial 2-0 win over Mallorca at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia, giving them a three-point buffer above the drop zone heading into the final matchday. It was their fifth consecutive home victory against Mallorca, and it leaves the visitors needing a win next Saturday to avoid relegation.
With both teams level on 39 points, the stakes were high and nerves were obvious. Defences held firm for the opening half hour, and neither goalkeeper had to make a save.
Carlos Espà looked lively in the opening stages, and he broke the deadlock with Levante’s first shot on target. He picked up on sloppy defending from Mallorca and struck from the edge of the box to put the hosts ahead.
The goal stunned Mallorca, but they nearly hit back straight away. Zito Luvumbo rose highest to meet a lofted cross and got a clean header on goal. Mathew Ryan reacted quickly to keep it out and preserve Levante’s lead.
Mallorca didn’t come closer to an equalizer before halftime, and with results elsewhere going against them, they went into the break sitting 19th and three points from safety.
The second half started just as nervously as the first. Iván Romero had a chance to extend Levante’s lead but dragged his shot just wide of the left post.
Mallorca struggled to respond right away. They had a better opening on the hour mark when Sergi Darder found space in the box, but he dragged his shot well wide.
Changes from the Mallorca bench failed to shift momentum. With Levante staying solid, the visitors looked set for a 10th defeat in 14 LaLiga away games.
Mallorca had conceded at least two goals in eight of their previous nine games, so Levante looked well placed to finish the job. Espà had the chance to double the lead in the 75th minute after finding space, but he shot straight at Leo Roman.
Frustration grew in the stands as the game dragged on, and it boiled over when Roger Brugué and Johan Mojica were sent off after a scuffle. Mojica was dismissed for pulling Brugue’s hair during the incident.

Levante responded better to the chaos and sealed the win when Kervin Arriaga headed in a well-delivered corner from Jon Ander Olasagasti.
Even with the win, Levante face a tough trip to Betis next Saturday. A draw might not be enough depending on other results.
Mallorca will start the day second-bottom and needing a win. They do have a more favorable fixture at home to already-relegated Oviedo, which gives them more hope than many sides in their position.
