Lens finish season perfectly ahead of Coupe de France final

A dominant Lens side ended Lyon’s hopes of third place, sealing a 4-0 victory and carrying momentum into the Coupe de France final.

Lyon’s defensive issues were exposed again as Lens ran riot at the Groupama Stadium to finish fourth in Ligue 1...

Lens finished their Ligue 1 season in style with a dominant 4-0 win over Lyon at the Groupama Stadium. The result ended a run of five away league games without a victory.

After losing midweek and seeing the title race decided, Lens had little left to play for except pride. Second place was already secured heading into the game.

Lyon knew only a win would keep their hopes of catching Lille for third alive.

Despite that, Lens came out on top early and were 2-0 up within 32 minutes.

Kyllian Antonio threaded a perfect pass through the defense to find Wesley Saïd in the inside-left channel. The forward curled a precise finish into the far right corner.

Lyon couldn’t get into the game, and they fell two behind just after the half-hour mark.

Amadou Haidara released Saïd down the left side of the box again, and he produced another composed finish, blasting it into the roof of the net past Dominik Greif.

Paula Fonseca made two changes at halftime to try and spark a turnaround in Lyon’s final game of the season.

The hosts saw more of the ball after the break, and Afonso Moreira created a chance after cutting in from the left. His shot was straight at Mathieu Gorgelin and easily held.

Any chance of a comeback disappeared quickly when Lens made it 4-0 in the 54th minute, carving through the Lyon defense with ease.

Andrija Bulatovic played Thauvin through on goal, and the Frenchman finished with a superb chip over Greif for the best goal of the night.

Lyon’s high defensive line kept getting exposed, but they still created chances at the other end. Roman Yaremchuk combined with Pavel Sulc in the box and struck the crossbar.

The hosts kept pushing for a goal. Corentin Tolisso curled an effort just wide of the left post, and Gorgelin was called into action to stop Sulc’s first-time strike.

In the end Lyon couldn’t salvage any pride. They finished a roller-coaster season, which included a 13-game winning run, with a 4-0 home defeat.

Lens looked sharp all night and head into the Coupe de France final in good shape. They will face Nice, who are also fighting in the Ligue 1 relegation play-offs.
