Lookman’s penalty helps Atletico down Osasuna in Pamplona

Atletico Madrid beat Osasuna 2-1 in LaLiga thanks to goals from Ademola Lookman and Alexander Sorloth, holding on after Marcos Llorente’s late red card.

Ademola Lookman’s penalty helped Atletico beat Osasuna despite going down to 10 men late on, keeping them fourth in LaLiga...

Atletico Madrid picked up a 2-1 win away at Osasuna, scoring in both halves to claim their third LaLiga victory in four matches.

Even with Champions League qualification already secured for next season, Diego Simeone’s team started strongly in Pamplona and took a deserved lead in the 15th minute.

After a lengthy VAR check for handball against Javi Galan inside the area, referee Jose Luis Guzman Mansilla pointed to the spot. Ademola Lookman stepped up and converted clinically for his eighth goal in all competitions since arriving from Atalanta in January.

Osasuna nearly pulled level in the 24th minute after a poor back pass from Koke, but Ante Budimir chipped his effort just over the bar from 15 yards.

Budimir was involved again in first-half stoppage time following a collision with Juan Musso. Referee Guzman Mansilla initially gave a penalty to the hosts, but reversed the decision after checking with VAR.

The second half opened in much the same way as the first, with half-time substitute Alexander Sorloth dragging two chances wide of Aitor Fernandez’s goal.

Atletico’s wastefulness in front of goal gave Osasuna openings to equalise, with Alejandro Catena heading wide from a corner and Musso pulling off saves to deny Kike Barja and Ante Budimir.

The hosts were punished for those missed chances when Sorloth reacted quickest to Marcos Llorente’s back-post cross, doubling Atleti’s lead and putting the win at El Sadar beyond doubt.

Llorente’s night wasn’t over there. The Spain international picked up a second yellow card for bringing down Aimar Oroz.

With Atletico down to 10 men and just over 10 minutes left, Osasuna had a lifeline. They pulled one back in stoppage time through Barja’s strike, but it came too late to change the result.

The win keeps Atletico in fourth place, three points adrift of Villarreal. Simeone will need strong results in the last two games if he’s to snatch third for the fifth time in seven seasons.

Osasuna stay 11th, with only a slim shot left of breaking back into the European qualification spots.
