The 39-year-old confirms his retirement in a TV2 Sport interview, closing the chapter on 120 caps for Denmark and spells at Leicester and Celtic.

The long-time Denmark No.1 says “now is the right time” to retire after a shoulder injury sustained against Portugal last year...

Kasper Schmeichel has announced he will retire from football after suffering a serious shoulder injury, bringing an end to a distinguished career.

The Danish goalkeeper confirmed his decision in an interview with TV2 Sport. He will officially hang up his gloves when his contract with Celtic runs out this summer.

“I have thought a lot about it, but I believe that now is the right time,” says Schmeichel in the interview. The 39-year-old goalkeeper mentioned back in March that a shoulder injury might have already ended his playing career.

Since then, he has seen several surgeons and specialists about the injury. According to Schmeichel, they told him he shouldn’t expect to come back and play at the top level again.

The Denmark goalkeeper, who was first choice for many years, hasn’t played for Celtic since 22 February. He was also unavailable when the Danish national team met in March for the World Cup play-off matches.

At the time, he said this was not a final goodbye to the national team. Now he admits he didn’t realize in March just how serious the shoulder injury was.

Schmeichel first hurt his shoulder in a match against Portugal last year, and reinjured it again in February. Speaking to CBS Sports, he explained that the problem is complicated by damage to his biceps as well.

Before Celtic, Schmeichel played for clubs including Anderlecht, Nice, and Leicester.
