How Anthony Gordon Fits Hansi Flick’s Barcelona Plans
Why Barcelona’s move for Anthony Gordon makes perfect sense

After Flick’s reported talks with Gordon, Barcelona are set to sign the Newcastle star. His goals, work rate, and versatility make him a key target.

With Lewandowski gone and Torres possibly leaving, Gordon could fill Barca’s striker gap. His 17 goals and Champions League form explain the push...

Barcelona’s sudden push to sign Anthony Gordon has caught most football fans off guard. Reports say the club is already deep in talks and close to finalizing a deal for the Newcastle winger.

Anthony Gordon’s future at Newcastle has been a talking point for months, but Barcelona weren’t part of the conversation. Liverpool were seen as the most likely destination, and Bayern Munich were also linked with a serious interest in the England international.

Why the Deal Came Together So Fast

Barca have already agreed both a transfer fee with Newcastle and personal terms with Gordon. Reports say he’ll fly to Barcelona Thursday afternoon for his medical and to sign the contract.

What looked like a sudden transfer now makes more sense in hindsight. Photos of Hansi Flick chatting with Gordon after their Champions League meeting earlier this season take on a new meaning with this move on the table.

On the surface, signing another left winger seems odd since Raphinha is first choice there and Marcus Rashford is the backup, assuming Gordon’s arrival doesn’t change that.

But Flick likely isn’t buying Gordon just for the left flank. His time at Newcastle showed he’s comfortable on the right or through the middle, and he’s handled both roles just as well.

Gordon as Barca’s Striker Solution

With Robert Lewandowski already gone and Ferran Torres possibly on his way out with just a year left on his deal, Barca could be left without a true No. 9. Even if they manage to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, they’d still need a reliable backup up front.

So what makes Anthony Gordon fit that role?

In a Newcastle side that struggled in 2025/26, he stood out as their best player in quality, work rate, and end product. He finished the season as the Magpies’ top scorer with 17 goals and 5 assists across all competitions, including 10 goals in the Champions League.

More than just goals

Gordon brings more than goals to the table. His non-stop work rate and direct, aggressive running have stood out to Thomas Tuchel at England level, and they’re qualities that set him apart from most players in his position
