Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng returned to the site of her biggest career win and was beaten 6-4, 6-0 by Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the French Open first round on Monday.

Zheng has struggled to match the form that won her gold at the Paris Olympics two years ago. A chronic right elbow injury slowed her progress and led to surgery last summer.

The 23-year-old reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals last year. She took a medical timeout for a foot issue during the second set before suffering her first opening-round exit at the French Open.

World No. 114 Maja Chwalinska advanced through three qualifying rounds, including two 6-0 sets, and showed no mercy against Zheng. She closed out the match to set up a second-round meeting with either Tatjana Maria or 23rd seed Elise Mertens.
