The Football Association confirmed on Thursday that it has started an investigation into Southampton. The club admitted to watching the training sessions of three Championship rivals this season.
Southampton were removed from the Championship playoffs after acknowledging the spying. The observation took place within 72 hours of matches. Middlesbrough were reinstated on Tuesday and will face Hull City in Saturday’s final.
The winner of the final earns promotion to the Premier League next season. The match is often called the richest game in soccer because of the financial reward at stake.
“We will now investigate, and won't comment further until we have assessed the evidence,” the FA said in a statement.
The club have also received a four-point deduction for next season. Their appeal, which claimed the punishment was “disproportionate,” was rejected on Wednesday.
