PSV midfielder Ismael Saibari has been named Eredivisie Player of the Year at the annual Eredivisie Awards.

The 25-year-old was central to a dominant PSV side that won the league by a record 19 points. The Spanish-born Morocco international scored 15 goals and provided 8 assists in 27 appearances for the Eindhoven club.

Saibari’s standout performance came in October when PSV faced league leaders Feyenoord while trailing by three points. He scored a hat-trick to lead PSV to a crucial victory and take them to the top of the table, a position they held for the rest of the season.

Following another strong campaign, Saibari looks likely to leave PSV after the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Speaking to ESPN after receiving the award, he said: “After winning the league three times, this is the cherry on top.”

The Morocco international beat out teammate Joey Veerman, Ajax’s Mika Godts, NEC’s Tjaronn Chery, and Heerenveen’s Jacob Trenskow for the award.

Captains from all 18 Eredivisie clubs vote for the Eredivisie Player of the Year, and ESPN reported that a large number backed Saibari.

Godts Named Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year

Ajax winger Mika Godts received the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year award. The Belgian had a breakout season with Ajax, scoring 17 goals and adding 12 assists, which made him the most valuable player in the league.

Godts was chosen as Talent of the Year by the managers of all 18 Eredivisie clubs. He received the trophy from mentor and former striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. During the ceremony, Godts said to Huntelaar: “You brought me to Ajax and put your trust in me; I’ll be eternally grateful to you for that.”

Ajax ended the season in fifth place during a historically poor campaign. They qualified for the second round of the UEFA Conference League qualifiers after beating FC Groningen and FC Utrecht in the play-offs.

Godts edged out Kees Smit of AZ to win the award. Dies Janse of FC Groningen, Sami Ouaissa of NEC Nijmegen, and Mats Rots of FC Twente were also nominated.

Excelsior’s Gyan de Regt won Goal of the Year for his bicycle kick against Fortuna Sittard in October.
