Kobbie Mainoo proved the difference as Manchester United held off a late Liverpool rally to win 3-2, clinching a Champions League spot and a first league double over their rivals in 10 years.
With top-four implications on the line, United started aggressively and were rewarded early. Matheus Cunha’s deflected left-foot strike took two deflections before looping in, and while luck played a part, it capped a bright opening from the hosts.

United struck again before the 15th minute. Benjamin Sesko was denied from close range by Freddie Woodman, but reacted quickest after Woodman parried Bruno Fernandes’ header into his path, bundling the loose ball over the line.
Cody Gakpo nearly pulled one back, curling an effort just wide with Senne Lammens beaten. United didn’t let up though, and Fernandes came close to making it 3-0 with a half-volley that flashed past the post.

Liverpool were glad to hear the halftime whistle after a sloppy opening 45 minutes where they could have been further behind. Ryan Gravenberch did force a save from Lammens late on, but it was little consolation in a half they largely struggled to control.
Liverpool started the second half in control after a poor first 45, and pulled one back almost immediately. A sloppy pass from Amad Diallo straight to Dominik Szoboszlai let the Hungarian drive half the length of the pitch before slotting into the bottom corner.
They completed the turnaround 10 minutes later, again capitalizing on a United mistake. Senne Lammens’ loose pass was intercepted by Alexis Mac Allister, who fed Szoboszlai to set up Cody Gakpo for a tap-in into an empty net.
United looked beaten at that point, but found a response late on to retake the lead.
Liverpool failed to clear Luke Shaw’s cross properly, and Kobbie Mainoo struck from the edge of the box after Alexis Mac Allister’s weak clearance, sweeping home in front of the Stretford End to put United back in front.
Gakpo forced a save from Lammens as Liverpool chased an equalizer, but United held firm to secure a top-five finish. The win also strengthened Michael Carrick’s case for the permanent job in what was his final home game in charge.

For Liverpool, the defeat isn’t likely to derail their top-five push, with a six-point lead and three games left to play.
