Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed was left out of Egypt’s preliminary squad for next month’s World Cup. In his place, uncapped teenager Hamza Abdelkarim from Barcelona’s under-19 team was included.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah will captain the squad. He will partner with Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush in attack at the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19 across the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Coach Hossam Hassan will cut one player to bring the squad down to FIFA’s 26-player limit. The decision will come after Egypt’s final home friendly against Russia in Cairo on May 28, before the team travels to the United States.

Mohamed’s omission came as a surprise, though he has struggled for form this season. He scored only four goals in 24 games for Nantes as the club was relegated from Ligue 1.

Abdelkarim, by contrast, has been in strong form for Barcelona’s youth team and is regarded as one of Egypt’s most promising young forwards.

Egypt will face Brazil in a friendly in Cleveland on June 6, then open their World Cup campaign against Belgium in Seattle nine days later.

They will play New Zealand in Vancouver on June 21, and finish their Group G fixtures against Iran in Seattle five days later.
