De Zerbi Link Gives Spurs Edge Over Chelsea and Liverpool for Van Hecke

Tottenham hold 'key advantage' in race for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke

Spurs could reunite De Zerbi with Van Hecke this summer if they avoid relegation, despite competition from Chelsea and Liverpool for the 25-year-old defender.

Van Hecke has become a defensive mainstay under Hurzeler, but a reunion with former Brighton boss De Zerbi at Tottenham remains a possibility.

Tottenham Hotspur have been monitoring Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke for some time, with Roberto De Zerbi’s connection to the club potentially speeding up any move.

Spurs plan to strengthen at centre-back in the summer, though the type of player they target will hinge on whether they secure Premier League survival.

Tottenham are now positioned to avoid the drop at West Ham’s expense, and staying up would open the door to an active summer window that begins with bolstering the defense.

TEAMTalk reports that Spurs intend to pursue Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke more aggressively ahead of the transfer window, even with Chelsea and Liverpool also showing interest.

Jan Paul van Hecke has grown into one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-backs, anchoring Fabian Hurzeler’s defense at Brighton with consistent performances.

Even if Brighton manage to push into the European spots - they sit just two points behind sixth-placed Bournemouth - it may not be enough to keep their defensive mainstay at the AMEX.

According to TEAMtalk, De Zerbi’s history with Van Hecke hands Tottenham a “key advantage” in talks and could improve their odds of signing the 25-year-old.

The defender made 50 appearances under De Zerbi at Brighton between 2022 and 2024, with the Italian coach instrumental in his development. A reunion at Tottenham is now on the cards this summer, provided Spurs retain their top-flight status.
