The Colorado Avalanche erased a three-goal deficit and beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in overtime in Game 5, sealing a 4-1 series win and a spot in the Western Conference final.
Colorado had been averaging five goals a game at home and hoped to close things out in Denver, but it was Minnesota who struck first. The Wild jumped out to a 3-0 lead early.
Marcus Johansson opened the scoring just 34 seconds in, finishing from close range to put Minnesota ahead right away.

About halfway through the first period, Minnesota made it 2-0. Nico Sturm sent a pass across the crease to Nick Foligno, who redirected it past MacKenzie Blackwood to quiet the Denver crowd.

Colorado’s night went from bad to worse late in the period when Foligno struck again. Sturm set him up for the second time, with his initial shot saved, but Foligno was on hand to bury the rebound and push the lead to 3-0.
Colorado wasn’t happy with MacKenzie Blackwood after he conceded three goals in the opening period, so they switched goalies during the first intermission.
It took a while for the Avalanche to get on the board, but Parker Kelly did it by tipping Brent Burns’ shot past the Wild goaltender.

Still trailing after two periods, Colorado turned up the heat in the third. They outshot Minnesota 9-4 over the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Jack Drury made it 3-2 with 3:30 left, redirecting Devon Toews’ shot past the goalie in almost identical fashion to Kelly’s earlier goal.
Two minutes later, the Avalanche had it level. With an extra attacker on the ice, Nathan MacKinnon fired from a tight angle and beat Jesper Wallstedt top shelf to make it 3-3.

The game headed to overtime with Colorado carrying all the momentum, and it didn’t take long for them to end the series. Less than four minutes in, the Avalanche closed it out.
After stopping a Wild attack, Colorado went on the counter through Martin Necas. He skated behind the net and waited for support, then found Brett Kulak on the opposite wing. Kulak fired into an almost open net to win it.
The goal capped off the comeback and sent the Avalanche to the Western Conference final with a 4-1 series victory.
Up next for the President’s Trophy winners is either the Vegas Golden Knights or Anaheim Ducks. Vegas leads that series 3-2 heading into Game 6.
