Tottenham’s loss at Chelsea sends relegation battle to final day. Spurs have now gone 10 games without a win at Stamford Bridge...

Tottenham’s tough season will come down to the last game after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea. The result means they still have to secure Premier League survival on the final day.

Chelsea nearly gifted Tottenham an early goal when Jorrel Hato’s backpass wrong-footed Robert Sanchez. The ball rolled past the post and the hosts avoided disaster.

In the 10th minute, Sanchez scrambled across his goal line as Mathys Tel’s header at the back post hit the upright and bounced away.

After weathering those early chances, Chelsea settled into the game. Antonin Kinsky tipped Cole Palmer’s shot around the post just before the 15th minute. Three minutes later, he had no chance when Enzo Fernandez struck.

The Chelsea captain curled a precise shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards to open the scoring. The goal also took him to 10 Premier League goals for the season.

Chelsea controlled the game after going ahead. Liam Delap blazed over from inside the box, and Fernandez then smashed a free kick from a tight angle against the crossbar.

Tel nearly cleared the stands with Tottenham’s only response. In stoppage time, Palmer’s low shot fizzed just past the post before the half-time whistle went with Chelsea still leading.

Spurs have earned 26 of their 38 points away from home this season, so their travelling fans had reason to think a comeback was possible after the break.

Richarlison, left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad less than 24 hours earlier, met Randal Kolo Muani’s cross just before the hour mark. His header was saved by Sanchez.

Tottenham were undone in the 67th minute when Pedro Neto’s deep cross was laid back by Fernandez. Andrey Santos had too much space and slotted home from six yards.

Spurs looked beaten after going 2-0 down, but Roberto De Zerbi’s side pushed for a comeback. They pulled one back in the 74th minute when substitute Pape Matar Sarr backheeled the ball in the box and Richarlison slammed it home from close range.

Tottenham’s superior goal difference over West Ham meant a draw would almost certainly keep them up. With time running out, they threw everything forward against Chelsea.

James Maddison came off the bench and had a good chance from a tight angle, but Hato made a last-ditch block. From the resulting corner, Micky van de Ven appealed for a penalty after tangling with Marc Cucurella, but the referee waved it away.

Maddison sent a stoppage-time free kick over the bar. The result ended Chelsea’s seven-game winless run in the Premier League and lifted them back into the European places. It also spared them the unwanted record of losing five straight home league games for the first time.

Tottenham have now gone 10 games without a win at Stamford Bridge. To stay up, they must avoid defeat against Everton on Sunday or hope Leeds take points off West Ham.
