| Europa League final 2026, Villa 3-0 Freiburg |
Unai Emery won a record fifth Europa League title as Aston Villa produced a dominant 3-0 victory over Freiburg in Istanbul.
Unai Emery makes history as Villa crush Freiburg in Europa League final...
Aston Villa traveled to Istanbul for the Europa League final against Freiburg, with the competition holding special significance for manager Unai Emery.
The 54-year-old Basque coach had already won the trophy three times with Sevilla in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and later led Villarreal to the title in 2021.
Emery Chasing History as Villa Face Freiburg
If Unai Emery wins with Aston Villa, he will become only the fourth manager to claim five European titles, joining Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho, and Giovanni Trapattoni.
The victory would also end Villa’s 44-year wait for a European trophy and give the club its first silverware since the 1996 League Cup final win over Leeds United, excluding the Play-Off final success.
Freiburg’s perfect home record in Europe, with seven wins in seven games at Europa-Park Stadion, 17 goals scored and three conceded, looked threatening on paper. However, across all competitions they had lost three of their last six matches, winning two and drawing one, scoring 11 goals but conceding 12 in that spell. Villa’s last six results were almost identical, with three losses, two wins, one draw, 11 goals scored and eight conceded.

An Even Contest on Paper
The match looked set for an exciting, closely fought encounter between two teams of similar quality.
The game started at pace. Freiburg’s Ivan Matanovic headed wide in the first minute, and moments later Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers registered the first shot on target.
Once the tempo settled, Villa began to dictate play with their passing. Morgan Rogers finished with a 93.8% pass completion rate, while Ezri Konsa was close behind on 93.2%.
Matty Cash was fortunate to avoid a red card after a heavy challenge earned only a yellow. He made the most of that reprieve, winning half of his aerial and ground duels and regaining possession three times in a hard-working individual display.
Villa Take Control
Freiburg offered little going forward and ceded 67% of possession to Villa in the opening 30 minutes.
Their first shot on target did not come until the 34th minute through Johan Manzambi, and that summed up their attacking struggles. It was one of only two efforts they managed on target across the entire match.
Villa pushed forward at every chance, with Rogers testing the goalkeeper three times himself. It felt like only a matter of time before the English side broke through.
When the goal arrived, it was worth the wait.

Tielemans and Buendia Score Stunning Goals
A well-rehearsed corner routine left Youri Tielemans unmarked inside the box, and he volleyed home Morgan Rogers’ perfect cross to open the scoring.
Freiburg were under heavy pressure for the rest of the half. After Villa missed three chances, Emi Buendia curled a shot into the top corner that left goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no chance. If anything, Buendia’s finish was even more impressive than Tielemans’ strike.
Despite three of Freiburg’s defenders winning 100% of their tackles, the back line was repeatedly pulled apart by Villa’s relentless attack.
Freiburg Struggle to Create Anything
Getting the ball to their forwards proved almost impossible for Freiburg. Niklas Beste managed just four passes in the first half, highlighting how ineffective their attack was.
Matthias Ginter was the only player who looked close to his best. He contested 11 one-on-one duels, completed 92.3% of his passes, and made six entries into the final third, the second-highest for Freiburg.
That effort was not matched by his teammates. After Villa created three more chances early in the second half, Morgan Rogers ended the contest by getting ahead of his marker to turn in Buendia’s cross.
Villa eased off after that, but even with Freiburg holding 69% possession for the next 15 minutes, they rarely looked dangerous.
A Deserved Win for Villa
With Matanovic on 50%, Manzambi on 74.1%, and Vincenzo Grifo on 77.1% for pass completion, Freiburg never found any rhythm. The final 30 minutes became a procession for Villa.
Amadou Onana came close to adding another goal minutes after coming on, but his effort hit the woodwork. Freiburg failed to show up on the biggest stage. They managed only four shots in total compared to Villa’s 17, and just two on target against Villa’s six.

Freiburg edged possession 50.7% to 49.3%, and also led in total passes 366 to 356 and accurate passes 309 to 306. That slight advantage came largely from Villa easing off in the later stages.
It was a win Villa fully deserved, and it secures them a return to the Champions League next season.
