Arthur Fils Withdraws from French Open with Hip Injury

Arthur fils pulls out before start

Arthur Fils withdrew from the French Open with a hip issue, ending his chances of following up strong runs in Barcelona, Madrid and Miami.

“In Rome, I felt a little bit like around the hip, you ‌know, pain. It was bothering me a lot...”

French hopes of a home winner at Roland Garros took a hit before the tournament even started. World No. 19 Arthur Fils pulled out on Saturday due to hip pain.

The 21-year-old had looked like a genuine contender after winning in Barcelona and reaching the semi-finals in Madrid. He was forced to retire in Rome earlier this month while trailing Andrea Pellegrino in the second round.

“In Rome, I felt a little bit like around the hip, you ‌know, pain. It was bothering me a lot. I didn't ‌want to take any risk,” Fils told reporters. He said the exams he did later looked “pretty fine,” but the pain persisted.

“I wasn't able to practice for the last two weeks. Actually, the practice today was my first points since two weeks in Rome,” Fils said.

"I'll not be fit 100% to play the tournament, and I'll not take any risk like I did last year. I don't want to be stupid.”

Fils had been scheduled to face Stan Wawrinka in the first round at Roland Garros.

This latest withdrawal fits a pattern of injuries disrupting his career. He also pulled out of the French Open last year after the second round with a stress fracture in his lower back.

That injury effectively ended most of his 2025 season. A short comeback in Toronto in August proved too soon, and he needed another extended spell out to recover.

Since returning in February, Fils has shown strong form. He made deep runs in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami, then won his first title since coming back by beating Andrey Rublev in the Barcelona final.

Yannick Noah remains the only Frenchman to win a Grand Slam in the professional era. He won the French Open on home soil in 1983.

The French Open gets underway on Sunday.
