Antoine Semenyo Breaks 30-Year Record with FA Cup Final Winner vs Chelsea
| Semenyo’s strike secures FA Cup glory |
Antoine Semenyo scored a stunning winner against Chelsea to give City the FA Cup, becoming the first Ghanaian to score in the final.
After scoring 10 goals for Bournemouth and 10 for City this season, Semenyo remains humble despite his record-breaking run...
“I’ve done it in training” - that’s how Antoine Semenyo described the stunning winner he scored to give City the FA Cup. The Ghana forward’s instinctive strike against Chelsea made him the first Ghanaian to score in the final and ended a 30-year scoring record.
Semenyo’s moment of magic at Wembley on Saturday proved to be the difference, with City edging Chelsea 1-0 in a tight final.
With the game still goalless and both sides pushing for an opening, Semenyo picked up the ball in a crowded spot, back to goal, surrounded by defenders and with almost no space to work with.
With no time to turn and nowhere to go, the Ghana forward improvised on the spot. He cushioned the ball into the bottom corner with a finish so clean it had everyone watching stop and take notice.
The strike made history instantly, as Semenyo became the first Ghanaian ever to score in an FA Cup final.
It didn’t stop there. The goal was his 20th across all competitions this season, breaking the record for the most goals scored by a Ghanaian player in a single campaign.
The record had stood for 30 years. It belonged to Tony Yeboah, who netted 19 goals for Leeds United in the 1995/96 season before Semenyo’s 20th pushed him past it.

Speaking right after the final at Wembley, Semenyo was typically blunt about the goal. He said improvising was the only choice he had in the moment.
“I just tried to improvise the best I could and it went in the bottom corner so I can't complain.
“I've done it a couple of times in training. It was behind me so that's the only thing I could do and luckily for me it went in,” he added.
It’s been a season split between two clubs, and both halves have been just as productive. Semenyo scored 10 goals for Bournemouth before January, then matched it with another 10 after moving to Manchester City. Through it all, the Ghanaian has stayed grounded.
“It's been hardwork. I am learning a lot with a lot of top pros around me and a top coach. Long may it continue.”
The win marked Pep Guardiola’s 20th trophy since taking charge at Manchester City. For Semenyo, it’s already his second piece of silverware since arriving in January, following the Carabao Cup triumph earlier this season. The forward knows exactly who’s behind that turnaround - Guardiola.
“He's a madman. We all love him. He's so passionate and wants to win trophies. What he's done for the club is amazing. I'm grateful he gets to coach me and make me a better player.”
The Wembley celebrations won’t last long. City shift focus to a midweek Premier League clash with Bournemouth as they chase a domestic treble.
