The Bayern Munich star will join Canada late after a hamstring injury, with Marsch targeting a return for later group stage matches.

Jesse Marsch says Davies will likely miss Canada’s June 12 opener against Bosnia but should feature later in the tournament after hamstring injury...

Alphonso Davies has been included in Canada’s World Cup training squad, but head coach Jesse Marsch said on Monday that the injured captain is unlikely to play in the team’s opening match. Marsch added that Davies should be available later in the tournament.

Davies picked up a hamstring injury on May 6 during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final second leg. When asked, Marsch confirmed the setback could rule the captain out of Canada’s World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.

“I think Alphonso will play in the World Cup,” Marsch told reporters at Canada's training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, before addressing Davies' chances for the opener. “No, I don’t think he’ll be ready quite on June 12th ... but we’ll see.”

Davies was one of 32 players named to Canada’s training camp earlier on Monday. Marsch said the player would not be in Charlotte and would instead link up with the squad on the eve of the June 1 friendly against Uzbekistan in Edmonton.

Davies has dealt with several injury setbacks that have kept him out of international duty for a full year.

The left back tore his ACL while playing for Canada in March 2025. He returned for Bayern Munich in December but suffered a torn muscle fiber in his right hamstring in February. A hamstring strain in March then ruled him out of two Canada friendlies.

Canada will announce their final World Cup roster at 7pm ET on Friday.

After the opening match, Canada will travel to Vancouver for games against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
