Iga Swiatek opened her clay-court campaign with a straight-sets win over Laura Siegemund Wednesday in Stuttgart. It was her first match since appointing Francisco Roig as coach.
The former world No. 1 bounced back from a shock Miami Open loss to compatriot Magda Linette last month, dispatching home favorite Siegemund 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
Swiatek ended her partnership with Wim Fissette after a second-round exit in Miami, then hired Roig, who spent years on Rafael Nadal’s coaching team.

The six-time Grand Slam winner has had a quiet season so far without a semi-final appearance, but she looked back to her best on clay. She owns 10 WTA titles on the surface, four of them at Roland Garros, and had little trouble putting away Siegemund.
Swiatek, seeded third and given a first-round bye, broke five times and never let Siegemund into the match.
Andreeva started fast in the round of 32 match in Germany, going up 2-0 before Ostapenko leveled. The 18-year-old hit back right away, breaking in the fifth game to move ahead again.
The Russian stumbled trying to close the set. At 5-4, deuce, back-to-back double faults on serve gave Ostapenko a route back in.
Ostapenko made the most of the lifeline, taking the next two games to steal the set. She closed it out with a fierce cross-court backhand winner on Andreeva’s serve.
Andreeva responded by breaking the Latvian in the third game of the second set.
She faced another tight moment serving for the set, double-faulting at deuce, but this time held firm to force a decider.

The third set saw early breaks from both players before Andreeva broke Ostapenko to lead 5-4, sealing victory in her first career meeting with the 2017 Roland Garros winner.
American Alycia Parks beat Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue in straight sets.
In an earlier match, fifth seed Jasmine Paolini exited in round one, losing 6-2, 6-2 to world No. 79 Zeynep Sonmez.
