Cisse's tenure marked by organization but inconsistent results, ending with stalemates against Niger Republic and Liberia...
Aliou Cisse has stepped down as Libya's national team coach due to financial challenges. The 50-year-old Senegalese legend was appointed in March 2025 on a two-year contract with an option for a third year. He confirmed his resignation on social media, citing enriching experiences despite difficulties faced during his tenure.
Cisse's departure comes after reports of eight months of unpaid salary, with his monthly salary reportedly set at $80,000. The Libyan Football Federation has been facing financial constraints, affecting payments to Cisse and his technical staff.
“Last March was exceptional for me, as it saw my final camp as head coach of the Libya national team. It was a very enriching adventure both professionally and personally, and I couldn’t leave without addressing you from the heart,” Cisse wrote on Instagram.
“To the technical staff and the players: despite the difficulties we faced, I am proud of the work we accomplished together and the results we achieved. I truly believe in this team, and I have no doubt that you will continue your efforts to move it forward.
“To the Libyan fans: I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave me, and for your enthusiasm and unlimited support. I will never forget you, and I know that the Knights of the Mediterranean will always be able to count on you. I wish you all the best in the future.”
The former Senegal star was in charge for 10 matches, with a record of three wins, five draws, and two losses. His last two games, against Niger Republic and Liberia, ended in stalemates.
Cisse brought much-needed organization to the team, but inconsistent results were a challenge, with the team often failing to capitalize on impressive performances.
Aliou Cisse, the former Senegal national team coach who led his country to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, has left his position as head coach of Libya's national team, known as the Mediterranean Knights. Despite facing challenges, Cisse was reportedly appreciative of the opportunity to manage the team ¹.
The Libyan Football Federation has begun searching for a new head coach following Cisse's abrupt exit. Cisse had been appointed as the head coach of Libya in March 2025, with a contract until 2027.
