Kenya's Faith Kipyegon is set to headline the inaugural women's mile at the Prefontaine Classic, taking place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on July 3-4, 2026, as part of the Wanda Diamond League circuit. Kipyegon, a world record holder, will be competing in her 11th Pre Classic appearance, where she has showcased several wins and record-breaking performances.

Kipyegon set the current mile world record in 2023 at the Monaco Diamond League meeting with a time of 4:07.64. She's also a three-time Olympic champion and four-time world champion in the 1500m event. The women's mile is a rare event at major championships, but Kipyegon's participation is expected to draw significant attention.

Faith Kipyegon shattered the women's 1500m world record at the 2025 Prefontaine Classic, clocking an incredible 3:48.68 at Hayward Field, University of Oregon. This achievement solidifies her position as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time.

Kipyegon is not only the current world record holder for the 1500m and mile, but also a former world record holder for the 5000m. Her impressive Olympic career boasts three consecutive gold medals in the 1500m, won at Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.

Kipyegon is on fire, she's bagged gold medals in the 1500m at the 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2025 World Championships, and even took home the gold in the 5000m at the 2023 World Championships.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she made history by becoming the first athlete to win three consecutive gold medals in the 1500m women's race, setting a new Olympic record in the process.

Kipyegon also has a silver medal in the 5000m, which she secured after a successful appeal overturned her initial disqualification. She's definitely racking up the medals.

Mile Marks America's 250th

The Prefontaine Classic is going big for Independence Day weekend 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. The event will feature top athletes, including Faith Kipyegon, competing in the inaugural women's mile.

The Oregon Track Club All-Comers Meet is back at The Prefontaine Classic, and it's open to youth athletes aged 12 and under on July 1. The following evening, July 2, fans of all ages can join in for the Night of Miles, a fun run/walk under the lights at Hayward Field.

The Prefontaine Classic is shaking things up by bringing back the women's mile, an event that's not been seen since 1993. This Diamond League meet is known for mixing up its schedule to keep things fresh and attract top athletes.

Mary Slaney's 1988 record of 4:21.25 is in the spotlight, and with Faith Kipyegon on board, it's likely to get smashed this July. The women's 1500m has been a staple for over 30 years, but the mile is the new exciting addition.
