Celebrini breaks Sharks points record in 6-1 rout of Jets

Macklin Celebrini broke the Sharks single-season points record with 115 as San Jose beat Winnipeg 6-1 on the final night of the NHL regular season.

Oilers, Sharks both Win 6-1 as NHL Regular Season Wraps Up. Teen star celebrini hits 115 points as Sharks crush Jets to end season...

The National Hockey League (NHL) regular season wrapped up Thursday with six games, half of which had playoff seeding at stake. Yet it was a teenager who stole the spotlight in one of the dead rubbers.

That was Macklin Celebrini, who scored and added two assists as the San Jose Sharks cruised to a 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Cole Koepke put the home side ahead three minutes and 28 seconds into the game, but it was all downhill from there. Celebrini set up Igor Chernyshov and William Smith later in the period to give the Sharks a lead at the first intermission.

Collin Graf, Michael Misa, and William Eklund added goals for San Jose in the second frame to push the lead to 5-1. Then, 74 seconds into the final period, Celebrini fired from point-blank range to beat Eric Comrie and round out the scoring.

It was the 19-year-old’s 115th point of the season, breaking the Sharks’ single-season record. He finished the year with 45 goals and 70 assists, becoming just the second teenager to post at least 40 goals and 70 assists in a regular season.

The Sharks end the year on 86 points, four points shy of the second wildcard spot. The Jets took a fourth straight loss and finish 12th in the Western Conference.

San Jose weren’t the only ones to win 6-1 that night, as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks by the same scoreline.

Coming off two straight losses, the Oilers started fast. Matthew Savoie scored a first-period hat trick, the first of his career, as they led 4-1 at the intermission.

The Canucks, who conceded a whopping 316 times this season, had no answer for Edmonton’s relentlessness and were outshot 54-19 in the match.

Joshua Samanski, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Colton Dach were the other scorers for the home side, who finished second in the Pacific Division. They will face the Anaheim Ducks in the opening round of the playoffs.

Speaking of the Ducks, they edged the Nashville Predators 5-4 at Bridgestone Arena. Troy Terry scored the winner with just under three minutes left in regulation to lift the visitors to the win.

Filip Forsberg and Steven Stamkos each scored twice for the Preds, who will miss the playoffs after a disappointing year. It wasn’t enough in a back-and-forth contest that went the Ducks’ way.

Anaheim will enter the playoffs with the second-fewest regular season wins among the Western Conference playoff teams.

Elsewhere, the Calgary Flames beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-1, while Robert Thomas netted a hat trick for the St. Louis Blues in their 5-3 win at the Utah Mammoth.

The last game of the night - and the regular season - saw the Colorado Avalanche come out on top 2-0 against the Seattle Kraken.
