Chad Tracy, manager of Boston’s Triple-A affiliate Worcester Red Sox, was named interim manager.
The firings came even after the Red Sox routed the Baltimore Orioles 17-1.
Cora, who led Boston to a World Series title in his debut season in 2018, leaves with the Red Sox in last place in the AL East at 10-17.
Since Cora’s championship run in 2018, the Red Sox - one of MLB’s most storied franchises - have made the postseason only twice.
“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude,” said Red Sox principal owner John Henry.
“He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways.”
“These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.”
At 50, Cora remains the first Puerto Rican manager to win a World Series.
His time leading the Red Sox came in two separate stints.
He left Boston in January 2020 after being implicated in a sign-stealing scandal during his time as Houston Astros bench coach.
The Astros illegally used technology, including a video camera, to steal catchers’ signs to pitchers and relay the upcoming pitch to their hitters.
Cora returned to Boston after his MLB suspension ended in November 2020. The Red Sox made the AL Championship Series the next year in 2021.
