Elmer Moller played the biggest match of his career Sunday against Jannik Sinner at the Madrid Open. The 22-year-old Dane fell 2-6, 3-6 to the Italian world No. 1, who advanced to the round of 16.
Sinner was too consistent and clinical for the world No. 169 Moller, powering to a one-hour, 17-minute third-round win in a packed Manolo Santana Stadium. It was Moller’s first career match against a Top-10 player.

With the win, Sinner stretched his Masters 1000 winning streak to 24 matches, the fourth-longest in series history.
“I tried to stay calm and serve well in important moments,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “I think that was the key today. There was not a lot of rhythm, so I tried to stay quite compact. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round.”
The Dane competed well in the second half of the match, finding rhythm on his backhand - his standout shot that has pushed him toward the world’s Top 100 - in the second set.
Despite the loss, Moller leaves Madrid with a strong week: two wins in qualifying and two more in the main draw before facing Sinner. After five matches in Madrid, he’s set to rise from No. 169 to near the Top 150 in the world rankings.
Moller’s career-high ranking is No. 102, set last year.
