A 45-year-old man from Gateshead has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a racially aggravated offence during the Tyne-Wear derby match between Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC on March 22. The match, which Sunderland won 2-1, was temporarily stopped due to discriminatory abuse from the crowd targeting Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

The man was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been released on police bail while investigations continue.

The Premier League match was briefly paused after the incident was reported from the crowd, prompting condemnation from both clubs. Sunderland expressed full support for Geertruida and praised his composure in reporting the matter to officials.

The arrested individual has been released on police bail pending further investigation. Northumbria Police condemned the incident, stating that racial abuse has no place in football or communities. Both Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC also condemned the incident, with Newcastle expressing their support for Lutsharel Geertruida.

Sunderland and another club have condemned the incident involving Jermain Defoe, standing by their player, as reported. Defoe was arrested on Tuesday and later released on police bail pending further enquiries, according to Northumbria police.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the matter. Sunderland has expressed support for their player, awaiting further developments.

“Racial abuse ‌has absolutely no place in football or in ‌our communities, and we will not tolerate this type of behaviour,” detective inspector Phil Guard said.
