Casper Ruud battled back from the brink to keep his title defense alive, beating former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/3).


In a high-quality three-hour battle, Tsitsipas led 5-3 in the decider with two match points and served for the win at 5-4. But Ruud, who was 0/11 on break points until then, finally broke the Greek’s serve and closed out the tie-break.

  


“I was on the brink of being on the way home already, so just really happy and proud the way I fought back,” said the Norwegian 12th seed.

  
Last week's Barcelona champion Arthur Fils reached the Caja Magica quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Argentine 25th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

 
Fils has reached the quarter-finals in six of the seven tournaments he's played so far in 2026.




The Frenchman will face Jiri Lehecka, who defeated sixth-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3, for a spot in the semi-finals.


Andreeva Celebrates Early With Madrid Run

In WTA action, ninth-seeded Mirra Andreeva gave herself an early birthday gift, beating Canadian Leylah Fernandez 7-6(7/1), 6-3 to reach her first Madrid semi-final.




A recent champion in Linz, Andreeva improved her clay-court record to 11-1 this season.
