The Pittsburgh Pirates are getting a boost ahead of their home opener, calling up baseball's top prospect, Konnor Griffin. Griffin, just 19, will make his major league debut starting at shortstop against the Baltimore Orioles.

Griffin, a Jackson, Mississippi native, was drafted ninth overall by the Pirates in the 2024 MLB Draft. He's been making waves with his impressive skills, earning him the top spot in baseball's prospect rankings

Griffin's sizzling start to the season in Triple-A ball - .438 AVG, 3 doubles, 1 RBI, and 3 stolen bases in just 5 games - is getting people excited. But it's his dominant 2025 minor league performance that's really catapulted him to prospect stardom.

Griffin had a standout season, racking up 122 games across Single-A, High-A, and Double-A levels. He crushed it with a .333 batting average, .941 OPS, 21 homers, 94 RBIs, and 65 stolen bases (78 attempts). Oh, and he took home the 2025 Minor League Gold Glove Award.

Griffin's Spring Training didn't exactly scream “breakout star” - he struggled at the plate, hitting just .171 (7-for-41) with 4 homers, 9 RBIs, 2 walks, 13 strikeouts, and 1 steal. Guess that's why they're easing him into the big leagues.

Griffin is stepping into a Pirates lineup that's middle-of-the-pack with a .231 batting average. Pittsburgh's got a 3-3 record so far, but things are still shaping up.

If Griffin sticks with the team all season, the Pirates will score a draft pick via the Prospect Promotion Incentively.
