Iraq has made history by securing a spot in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 40 years, defeating Bolivia 2-1 in the inter-confederation playoff final in Mexico. This thrilling victory marks Iraq's return to the global stage, with goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and Aymen Hussein sealing their place in the tournament.

The match was intense from the start, with Iraq taking an early lead through Al-Hamadi's powerful header in the 10th minute. Bolivia fought back, equalizing before halftime with Moises Paniagua's goal. However, Aymen Hussein's second-half strike proved decisive, securing Iraq's 2-1 win.

Iraq's coach, Graham Arnold, praised his team's mentality and dedication, saying, “I must congratulate the players who played with real Iraqi mentality, fighting and putting their bodies on the line.” The team will now compete in Group I alongside France, Norway, and Senegal.

Iraq's Lions of Mesopotamia came close to scoring early, with Amir Al-Ammari's superb free-kick forcing a brilliant save from Bolivia's Guillermo Viscarra, who tipped the ball onto the bar.

But Viscarra couldn't replicate the save a minute later, as Al-Ammari's excellent corner found Ali Al-Hamadi, who powered a header into the net, sparking huge celebrations.

La Verde bounced back strong from the setback, growing into the game and earning an equalizer just before halftime. Ramiro Vaca's speculative shot deflected off Moises Paniagua, landing perfectly for Wydad AC's forward, who trapped and slaced it past Ahmed Basil.

The goal marked a turning point, with La Verde pushing for more as the first half drew to a close.

Iraq captain Aymen Hussein took control in the early stages of the second half, scoring a crucial goal to put his side back in front. Substitute Marko Farji made an instant impact, his precise pass setting up Hussein for a perfect finish inside the area, securing his 33rd goal for Iraq.

Hussein's strike shifted the momentum, with Iraq pushing for more as they looked to capitalize on the goal.

Tension gripped the game after the hydration break, with both Iraq and Bolivia desperate for a win, making for an intense and scrappy second half.

As time ticked down, Iraq had a golden chance to seal it, but Mohanad Ali's shot flew over, lacking the composure needed in the moment.

Iraq secured a historic 2-1 win over Bolivia, booking their spot at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and ending a 40-year wait since their last appearance in 1986. This marks Iraq's second-ever World Cup qualification, with goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and Aymen Hussein securing their place in Group I.

Iraq's opponents in Group I will be tough competitors: France, Norway, and Senegal. Their World Cup journey begins on June 16 against Norway in Boston, followed by matches against France on June 22 in Philadelphia, and Senegal on June 26 in Toronto.
