FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) due to Islamophobic and xenophobic chants by Spanish fans during a friendly match against Egypt on March 31. The chants, “who doesn't jump is a Muslim,” were heard at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, home of LaLiga club Espanyol, during the goalless draw.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Spain winger Lamine Yamal, who is Muslim, calling the chants “disrespectful” and “intolerable.” The Egyptian Football Association also denounced the behavior as an “unacceptable act of racism.”

The Spanish police have launched an investigation into the incident, and the Spanish government has expressed its support for the RFEF's stance against racism. FIFA's disciplinary proceedings could result in sanctions, including a partial stadium closure or a fine of up to €21,000.

FIFA said in a statement:

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings today against the Spanish FA for the incidents in the friendly against Egypt.

Spanish police launched an investigation into Islamophobic chants during a friendly match between Spain and Egypt last week. The chants, which included “who doesn't jump is a Muslim,” sparked widespread criticism from Spanish football officials and the government.

Spain winger Lamine Yamal blasted the Islamophobic chants during the Spain-Egypt friendly, calling them “disrespectful and intolerable” on Instagram. He emphasized that using religion as a joke reflects ignorance and racism, saying “Football is for enjoyment and support, not for insulting people because of their identity or beliefs.”

The Egyptian Football Association also strongly condemned the chants, labeling them a “repugnant act of racism.” They assured that the incident wouldn't affect the strong relations between the Spanish and Egyptian federations.
