Spurs winless in 15 after late Brighton heartbreak

Georginio Rutter’s 95th-minute goal earned Brighton a 2-2 draw at Tottenham, extending Spurs’ winless PL run to 15 and damaging their survival hopes.

Brighton strike late to deepen Spurs relegation fears in 2-2 draw...

Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League (PL) survival push was dealt a harsh blow as Georginio Rutter’s 95th-minute equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw for Brighton & Hove Albion, leaving Spurs winless in 15 top-flight matches.

Tottenham’s fight to stay in the Premier League took another hit after Georginio Rutter’s equaliser in the 95th minute earned Brighton a 2-2 draw. The result means Spurs have now gone 15 top-flight games without a win.

Now in must-win territory in their bid to stave off a first relegation since 1976/77, the hosts had to start brightly against Brighton to get the crowd on side.

Facing a first relegation since 1976/77, Spurs came into this one desperate for points and needed a strong start to lift a nervous home crowd.

An underwhelming start that produced little in the final third didn’t help that cause, but the game burst into life soon after as cracks began to show for Spurs.

A deep free-kick was kept alive at the back post by Jack Hinshelwood, whose header back across goal was turned onto his own post by Micky van de Ven before the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium held its breath as the ball rolled along the line.

That moment proved to be a turning point for Spurs, who went ahead shortly before half-time.

A clever moment from Xavi Simons saw him dink the ball over the Brighton defence and Pedro Porro nipped in ahead of Bart Verbruggen to head the hosts in front.

One goal almost became two for Roberto De Zerbi’s side immediately after the restart, as within two minutes Simons struck the post before Porro’s follow-up forced a stunning fingertip save from Verbruggen to keep the deficit at one.

Simons believed he had sealed a late winner

Yet in typical Spurs fashion in 2025/26, their lead was gone before the break, and in some style too, as substitute Kaoru Mitoma lashed a superb left-footed volley into the roof of the net after Pascal Groß’s delivery picked him out unmarked at the back post.

That goal firmly shifted the momentum, but the Seagulls couldn’t turn their pressure into a lead after the restart and were instead fortunate not to fall behind when Simons had an effort blocked midway through the second half, with Verbruggen alert to push away João Palhinha’s follow-up.

It was becoming increasingly clear that Spurs needed something special to take all three points, and Simons delivered just that when he cut inside onto his preferred right foot at the edge of the box and unleashed a rocket that went in off the post.

Spurs had to dig deep in the closing stages but were dealt a crushing blow in the 95th minute when substitute Rutter was left unmarked in the area to sweep home an equaliser. That goal will have drawn loud cheers in Nottingham and East London, as it kept De Zerbi’s side in the bottom three with just five games left.
