Brentford’s winless run at home stretched to seven games after a goalless draw with Fulham at the Brentford Community Stadium, dealing a major blow to their hopes of a top-five Premier League finish.
An outstanding campaign had Brentford in Champions League contention with six games remaining heading into this match, a scenario few expected when Keith Andrews replaced Thomas Frank as head coach last summer.
Fulham, however, sat just three points behind the Bees before kick-off as they pursued European qualification themselves.
With so much at stake, it was no surprise that the first half was a tight, cautious contest with few clear chances for either side.
The hosts carried the greater threat, with Igor Thiago heading wide and Dango Ouattara seeing a shot easily saved before Keane Lewis-Potter blazed over the bar from close range with the best chance of the half.

At the other end, Ryan Sessegnon fired over from a similar position as Fulham’s run without a first-half goal away from home stretched to 10 matches in all competitions.
The second half followed the same pattern, with neither side able to build any sustained pressure.
Once again, Brentford looked the more threatening, and Mikkel Damsgaard came close to breaking the deadlock when he volleyed narrowly wide from Kevin Schade’s knockdown.
Nathan Collins was next to try his luck, but he could only glance a header past the post from a corner.
In the end, there was a clear lack of intensity on display despite just four miles separating the two clubs, and few could complain when the points were shared.
Still, Bernd Leno pulled off a stunning late stop to deny Ouattara in what was easily the standout moment of the match.
The result means Brentford miss the chance to leapfrog Chelsea into sixth before the Blues’ Saturday night game against Manchester United, and they have now drawn five straight league matches for the first time since 1957.
Meanwhile, Fulham stay 12th, still in the European mix, but struggling amid a run of five Premier League games without a win.
