PSG brush aside Liverpool as Dembele fires French giants into last four...
Paris Saint-Germain became the first French club to reach three straight UEFA Champions League semi-finals after beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. They matched their first-leg result to eliminate Arne Slot’s side for the second year running.
Aiming to overturn a 2+ goal first-leg deficit in the UCL for the first time since their famous 4-0 win over Barcelona at Anfield in 2018/19, Liverpool were driven on by the home crowd.
Despite a lively start from Liverpool, PSG had the first real chance when Giorgi Mamardashvili had to backpedal to stop Ousmane Dembele catching him off his line.
The next chance also fell to the Ballon d’Or holder, but he could only hook his effort over from close range. Liverpool’s night was then thrown into more uncertainty when former PSG man Hugo Ekitike was forced off injured.
That set up the introduction of Mohamed Salah, who almost made an instant impact just moments after coming on.
But that brought on Mohamed Salah, who nearly made an immediate impact moments after entering.
His cross was nodded down by Ibrahima Konate to Milos Kerkez, who was denied brilliantly by Matvey Safonov before Marquinhos slid in to stop fellow captain Virgil van Dijk bundling in the rebound.
The hosts struggled to create a better chance before the break, leaving PSG no doubt content to take their first-leg lead into halftime.
Slot made further changes at half-time, and his side looked better for it.
Cody Gakpo soon tested Safonov, before Joe Gomez headed over as he searched for his first career goal.
Liverpool kept pushing and were unlucky to see a penalty overturned by VAR after Willian Pacho brought down Alexis Mac Allister.
Rio Ngumoha’s introduction hinted at a late charge, but the Parisians struck a cruel blow with less than 20 minutes left.
Dembele collected the ball from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia outside the box, shifted onto his left, and curled his finish beyond Mamardashvili’s reach.

A couple of tame efforts were all Liverpool could manage, and PSG added to their misery in stoppage time when Bradley Barcola slid the ball across for an unmarked Dembele to tap in his second.
Les Rouge-et-Bleu have now knocked out a fifth English side from the UCL knockout stages over the last two seasons, and will surely be among the favorites to retain their title.

Now certain to finish this season without a trophy, Slot faces a fight to secure Liverpool a top-five Premier League finish. Failing to do so could see the Dutchman leave at the end of the campaign.
