KNVB upholds Dean James eligibility in Go Ahead Eagles' favor

Go Ahead Eagles won't be penalized for playing Dean James in 6-0 win over NAC Breda, KNVB rules. NAC Breda's appeal over Dean James' eligibility fails, Go Ahead Eagles spared punishment.

“This is because neither the player nor the club were aware of the automatic consequences of taking on a nationality other than Dutch...”

The KNVB has rejected NAC Breda's appeal, meaning Go Ahead Eagles won't face any penalties for playing Dean James in their 6-0 win.

NAC Breda had argued that James was ineligible, claiming he was playing with a Dutch registration after obtaining Indonesian nationality. The KNVB's decision means James can continue playing for Go Ahead Eagles.

Dean James made the switch to Indonesia in March 2025 and has already played 5 games for his new country. Go Ahead Eagles had precautionarily benched him for their PEC Zwolle match, awaiting clarity on his eligibility.

The KNVB's rejection of NAC's appeal has put Dutch clubs at ease, as they'd scrambled to sideline players amid fears of punishment and fines.

On Wednesday, the KNVB announced that Go Ahead Eagles will not face any penalties: “This is because neither the player nor the club were aware of the automatic consequences of taking on a nationality other than Dutch. Furthermore, it has become apparent that the consequences of adopting a different nationality were largely unknown in professional football,” the statement said.

The KNVB actually acknowledged that Dean James wasn't eligible to play for Go Ahead Eagles against NAC Breda.
