Palace refused to sit back and extended their aggregate lead inside 20 minutes. Daniel Munoz surged down the right and delivered a perfect cross for Ismaïla Sarr to head the Eagles in front on the night.

Fiorentina nearly went two down straight from kick-off. Palace won the ball back immediately and Sarr ran through on goal, but David de Gea saved with his legs to deny him a second.

Crystal Palace are through to the UEFA Conference League semi-finals despite a 2-1 defeat in their quarter-final second leg. The Eagles advanced 4-2 on aggregate in their first ever major UEFA competition.

Fiorentina needed to attack from the start with Palace three goals up from the first leg. But their slim hopes were hit early on.

Fiorentina were given a lifeline midway through the first half. Jaydee Canvot’s clumsy challenge on Rolando Mandragora resulted in a penalty.

After a long delay while Adam Wharton limped off injured, Albert Gudmundsson stepped up and sent Dean Henderson the wrong way from the spot to give Fiorentina faint hope of a comeback.

Fiorentina needed another goal before half-time to make the second half interesting. Manor Solomon came close when his long-range strike forced a fine one-handed save from Dean Henderson.

It was always going to take something special to get Fiorentina back into the tie. Substitute Cher Ndour delivered it 10 minutes after the restart, drilling a low shot from distance into the bottom corner.

Paolo Vanoli’s side kept pushing for another. Gudmundsson and Harrison both tested Henderson as Fiorentina searched for a third.

But some odd changes from the Fiorentina boss killed their momentum. He took off his two liveliest attackers in Gudmundsson and Solomon.

Palace’s survival instincts took over late on. They dug in to keep Fiorentina out and book their place in the last four, where Shakhtar Donetsk await.

Despite a spirited display, Fiorentina missed out on a fourth straight appearance in the semi-finals of this competition. They exited at the quarter-final stage for only the second time in their last 12 European ties.
