Clinical Leeds Brush Aside Doomed Wolves to Near Safety

Leeds Vs Wolves
Leeds put nine points between themselves and drop zone with Wolves win

Goals from Justin, Okafor and Calvert-Lewin gave Leeds a 3-0 win over Wolves, moving them nine clear of danger and sending Wolves closer to the Championship.

Leeds move further clear of drop with comfortable victory over doomed Wolves...

Leeds United moved provisionally nine points clear of the Premier League relegation zone after a comfortable 3-0 win over an all-but-doomed Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road.

Buoyed by their first league win at Old Trafford in 45 years, Leeds wasted no time pushing toward the magic 40-point mark, with a fast start rewarded when the Whites took the lead in the 18th minute.

Showing the same defensive frailties that have left them days away from confirmed relegation, Wolves failed to clear an Ao Tanaka corner. After a scramble that saw Noah Okafor denied, the ball dropped kindly for James Justin to fire an overhead kick into the net.

The visitors barely had time to regroup after conceding a league-high 24th opening goal before Leeds doubled their lead just two minutes later.

A rapid counter down the right saw Brenden Aaronson cut open the fragile Wolves defence and slide a low ball to the far post, where Okafor - the two-goal hero at Old Trafford on Monday - gleefully finished for his fourth goal in five games, arriving inside the opening half-hour.

Only then did the away side regain some composure and create a couple of promising chances, but with Leeds ending the first half with a 5-1 advantage in shots on target, the points always looked secure.

That said, Ladislav Krejci nearly dragged Wolves back into it just after the hour when he headed straight at Karl Darlow from a corner.

Leeds, meanwhile, were far more measured than in their first-half blitz, with one eye clearly on next weekend’s huge FA Cup semi-final.

The travelling fans briefly found their voice when Adam Armstrong lobbed Darlow for what looked like a consolation in the 83rd minute, but the linesman’s flag denied Wolves even that small comfort.

For their part, Leeds’ best open-play chance late on fell to Pascal Struijk, who picked up a pass and drove towards goal before firing a powerful effort wide from the edge of the box.

Leeds did eventually get their third when Hugo Bueno brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the area, and the World Cup hopeful slammed his penalty past a helpless Daniel Bentley.

In truth, Wolves never looked like claiming a first away league win of the season, and their relegation will be confirmed if Tottenham beat Brighton in the early evening kick-off.

Leeds, meanwhile, will take real momentum into next weekend’s Wembley showdown with Chelsea after a fifth straight Premier League H2H win over Wolves.
