Leeds Stun Man United to End 45-Year Old Trafford Drought

Noah Okafor and a deflected strike give Leeds historic win as 10-man Man United’s late fightback falls short in 2-1 defeat...
Leeds took a huge step toward Premier League survival with a historic 2-1 victory at Manchester United, their first league win at Old Trafford in 45 years.
For the first time since 1994/95, Leeds United also avoided defeat in both Premier League meetings with Manchester United in a single season.
The clash of these long-time rivals produced an energetic opening, and it was relegation-threatened Leeds United who came out sharper. They served early notice when Dominic Calvert-Lewin met Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross from six yards, only to see his effort blocked by the legs of Senne Lammens.
It was a warning United failed to learn from, because Leeds’ next dangerous cross into the box brought the opening goal. An unmarked Noah Okafor guided Jayden Bogle’s delivery past the keeper in front of the Stretford End.
United’s reply lacked bite, with Amad Diallo their only real threat. He first drove a shot straight at Karl Darlow before curling another effort just wide of the post moments later.
Leeds, though, were creating the clearer chances and they grabbed a deserved second just before the half-hour mark.
There was a slice of luck in how it happened - Okafor’s long-range volley took a deflection off Leny Yoro and spun into the corner - but Daniel Farke’s side fully merited their two-goal cushion.
United could have been three down by halftime after another defensive lapse gifted the ball away on the edge of their box. As Ao Tanaka rounded Lammens, a last-ditch goal-line challenge from Lisandro MartÃnez kept the hosts in the contest.
Michael Carrick surprisingly opted not to make any changes at halftime, and that call nearly paid off within five minutes of the restart. Benjamin Sesko’s strike looped up off the goalkeeper before James Justin headed it off the line to stop a certain goal.

The momentum United were building quickly evaporated after a bizarre incident saw MartÃnez pull Calvert-Lewin’s hair. Missed in real time, VAR intervened and advised Paul Tierney to review it on the pitchside monitor. After the check, he sent off the Argentine.

Spurred on by what they saw as a clear injustice, United raised their intensity and cut the deficit with 20 minutes left. Casemiro arrived at the far post to steer home Bruno Fernandes’ delivery and set up a tense finale.

The last 10 minutes should have been far more comfortable for the Whites. An unmarked Calvert-Lewin headed straight at Lammens from six yards when he should have made it three, and that miss nearly came back to haunt them. Sesko’s strike was saved by Darlow, Casemiro’s follow-up was headed off the line by Calvert-Lewin, and Manuel Ugarte had a rebound blocked inside the six-yard box.
Calvert-Lewin’s goal-line block turned out to be the match-winning moment, as Leeds saw out the game to move six points clear of the relegation zone.
